Baseball Michael Conforto Could be the Difference Maker for the Mets by Jayson Love September 8, 2015 from CBSNewYorkMichael Conforto has been solid and unflappable since his callup in July,. Curtis Granderson has been a leader, the veteran additions of Uribe and Kelly Johnson have been solid additions, and Yoenis Cespedes has been everything as advertised and more, but it is the kid Michael Conforto that could be the key to the offense down the stretch and into the playoffs should the Mets qualify. His response to the pressure of the first game of the biggest series the Mets have played since 2008 was homering to the opposite field against one of the game’s best pitchers Max Scherzer. The rookie has his average at .298 with an impressive 6 homeruns in just 104 ABs averaging an impressive homerun per every 17.33 plate appearances. He’s driven in 19 runs and has shown a good eye at the plate sporting a .375 OBP which is just .03 behind David Wright for the team lead though Wright has just 81 ABs. The 1969 Mets utilized a platoon approach to their magical season that culminated in a championship and the emergence of Conforto is a good left-handed hitting option for the Mets aganst right-handed pitching which is mostly what teams face. As a rookie, teams will pitch to Conforto in most situations, creating opportunities for him to impact games. He has been impactful at times and with teams likely to pitch around players like Yoenis Cespedes, it is a guy like Mike Conforto who could come up with big hits at big moments for the Mets.
