Football Report: Giants to Re-Sign ILB Jasper Brinkley by Guest March 21, 2016 While they have certainly slowed down after a wild first couple days of free agency, the Giants continue to make moves, as they have reportedly agreed on a one-year contract with free agent middle linebacker Jasper Brinkley. Brinkley, 31 in June, signed with the Giants last September after being cut by the Cowboys at the end of training camp. While he was initially a depth signing, the veteran ended up playing significant snaps for the Giants following Jon Beason’s season-ending injury. Last year was Brinkley’s first with the Giants, as he spent the first four seasons of his career with the Vikings. He joined the Cardinals for the 2013 season before returning to Minnesota in 2014. The Vikings originally drafted him in the fifth round of the 2009 draft out of South Carolina. Brinkley appeared in 15 games for Big Blue, starting nine at middle linebacker. He totaled 66 tackles, one sack, and a career-high four forced fumbles. He played well for the Giants down the stretch, excelling in stopping the run. It’s possible a dry market orchestrated Brinkley’s return to New York, as he made no known visits during the first week of free agency. Despite being a key piece to the Giants’ 2015 defense, Brinkley’s role for next season is uncertain. Beason retired after the season, leaving a gaping hole at the middle linebacker position, which Brinkley could get a chance to fill. The Giants also signed free agent Keenan Robinson, who will reportedly get a chance to earn a starting job as well. While Brinkley and Robinson are the favorites for the middle linebacker job, Uani ‘Unga, who started three games last season, could emerge as well. Of course, all three could be relegated to backup duty if the Giants find an upgrade via free agency or next month’s NFL Draft.
