Hockey Potential Islanders on the trading block…..already by Chris Passarelli October 24, 2018 The New York Islanders have only played seven games so far, but a combination of a disappointing start and underwhelming performances have some rumors brewing already. According to multiple sources, most notably David Pagnotta, Nick Leddy has most recently been put on the trading block. As per Pagnotta, Leddy was even discussed last season before Lou Lamoriello and crew took over this season. Leddy had fallen out of favor after posting a team worst -43 plus/minus, and has looked sluggish at best to start this season. With Devon Toews knocking on the door of the NHL and lots of defensive depth for the future, the once highly sought defenseman might now be the odd man out. He’s super talented and will fetch a lot in the open market but Leddy may be on his last legs with the islanders. Two other names to look out for early in the season are Jordan Eberle and Brock Nelson. For Eberle, it’s another case of odd man out. Eberle obviously won’t expect less than 7M AAV in the open market, and considering the Islanders need to pay Eberle, Lee, and Nelson, Eberle may be sent packing. Nelson is an intriguing case. He had been a dead man walking for many years with both management and fans, but he’s gotten off to a quick start and has thrived under new Head Coach Barry Trotz. If Nelson continues to play like this, and makes the most of his “prove it” deal, he’ll either be granted an extension or will be sent packing as well. It’s hard to say he’ll keep it up but Isles fans can hope. It has only been seven games, but considering how little everyone thinks about the Islanders, it may be a long season. Fans need to realize that there is a horizon at the end of this, and trading away some of their best assets will only help the Isles in the long run. Let’s just hope it doesn’t get to a point where everyone needs to go.
