In doing so, the Yankees clinched their first American League East title since 2012. New York cruised to their 100th win behind a stellar performance from starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. The right-hander went seven strong innings, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out six. The lone Angels run came on a solo homer by Kole Calhoun in the fourth inning. DJ LeMahieu got the party started for the Yankees with his 25th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the second inning off Angels starter Andrew Heaney. Brett Gardner added his career-high 26th home run in the fourth and Cameron Maybin and Clint Frazier added home runs in the eighth to pad the Yankees lead. Aroldis Chapman closed things out with a scoreless ninth and sent the Yankees into celebration mode. The Yankees are now headed to the postseason for the 21st time in the past 25 seasons. While they are division champions, the Yankees know they still have more goals to reach and more battles to win. New York will continue to battle the Houston Astros for the best record and home-field advantage. Both cluc currently sit with identical 100-53 records after Thursday. The pursuit for a 28th World Series championship is now in full swing for the New York Yankees.
