Wilmer Flores was on his way out of town, then he hit a game-winning homerun against the Nats.

After the Mets nearly had traded for Carlos Gomez earlier in the week – well, agreed to the trade then un-agreed, leaving Wilmer Flores on the field in an emotional state in the wake of the reported trade, it appeared to be business as usual in Metland.

There was of course the conflicting stories of how the trade fell through coupled with the added failure on the field of losing back-to-back games to the Padres, the second blowing a 7-1 lead.

Then, against all odds with New York’s media ripping Alderson and the Mets, the Mets added payroll and a player acquiring the trade deadline’s best available rental hitter Yoenis Cespedes without giving up any major league-ready talent.

New York acquired the Tigers’ slugger for Michael Fulmer, who projects as a middle of the rotation starter, and Luis Cessa an infield prospect.

The deal was done minutes to the deadline, and after a potential Jay Bruce deal fell through after “overnight negotiation” with the Reds and on the heels of the Gomez fiasco.

So with the script appearing to be marking the Mets failure to land a quality bat again and re-raised questions of finances, Alderson and the Mets flipped the script, changed the stories, and added the best player available; a true difference-maker in Cespedes.

Then, they went out and beat the first place Nationals later that night on a homerun by Wilmer Flores who was on his way out of town days earlier.
