Broad Street Boxing: Tevin Farmer v. Jono Carroll, Katie Taylor v. Rose Volante highlight March 15 DAZN show

Several titles will be on the line in Philadelphia come March 15th, including a very important unification bout. The Matchroom Boxing-led card will air on DAZN from inside the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA. It will be one of the many huge events during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

On one side, Philadelphia-born Tevin Farmer will look to successfully defend his IBF Super Featherweight Title for the third time against former champion Jono Carroll.

Farmer (28-4-1, 1 NC) won the vacant title from Billy Dib via unanimous decision after Kenichi Ogawa, who originally beat Farmer for the title, was later stripped for failing a drug test. The 28-year-old was on an 18-fight win streak beforehand. Both defenses have ended via KO (against James Tennyson) and unanimous (Fransisco Fonseca), all in 2018. With only six wins via KO, Farmer will look to prove he can be a durable champion.

“So listen, if you don’t know me, I am Tevin Farmer. I am a real Philly fighter. I came from nothing and I owe it all to my team,” Farmer stated at the official fight press conference. “This year I am looking to fight four or five times, maybe six if I can. I want to go down as one of the best to ever do it and 2019 is going to be a huge year for me.”  

Jono Carroll (16-0-1) will be fighting in his first world title shot. He was on a sixteen-fight win streak before suffering a draw while facing Guillaume Fenois in December. It was supposed to be a title eliminator matchup. Carrol has a history with Farmer, as the champion faced and beat his cousin at one point.

“I have been an underdog in most of my fights but I keep winning and winning and winning,” stated Carroll. “Come March 15, this kid Farmer won’t know what hits him. I am going to take his belt, easy work. I’ll take that home with me. If he beats me, you know what, I will take my hat off and tell him that he is a hell of a man. You know why? Because it is going to take a hell of a man to beat me.”

Another bout to look out for is a title unification bout between Katie Taylor and Rose Volante. Taylor (12-0) will be defending her WBA and IBF Lightweight Titles while Volante (14-0) will put her WBO Lightweight Title on the line. This unification bout means everything to these two women, who are looking to continue to put boxing on the map.

Taylor easily took care of Eva Whalstrom inside Madison Square Garden back in December to retain her titles. The Irish-born star is hoping to add to her belt collector name, while also looking for more gold down the line.

“Ever since I won my first world title as a pro my goal has been to unify the Lightweight titles so this is obviously a massive step towards that,” said Taylor. “Volante is unbeaten so I’m expecting a tough fight but that’s exactly the kind of challenge I want. I think the better the opponent and the bigger the challenge the better I will perform.”

As far as future opponents with a win, a potential bout against Amanda Serrano is always on the table. For now, she is ready for a tough fight against a game challenger. Although she has failed to show up at various press conferences, it is not a reason to refer Volante as a non-credible challenger. Her last fight was a TKO win against Yolis Franco. With eight wins via KO, Yolis might be the challenge Taylor has been waiting for in her young career.
