Football Former Jet Hackenberg fizzles in AAF debut by Chris Passarelli February 12, 2019 Christian Hackenberg made his AAF debut on Saturday for the Memphis Express. He was predictably bad, going 10/23 for 87 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception. What was even more impressive was the way he cussed up a storm after each and every incompletion thrown. An AAF rule that the NFL certainly does not have is that the players are actually mic’ed up. That certainly will result in some bleeped out words. Anyway, the point is that Hackenberg was very bad in what’s essentially a minor league to the NFL yet the man who drafted him is still tenured as GM of the Jets. How did Mike Maccagnan not see any of the red flags present with Hackenberg when he drafted him in the SECOND ROUND. This little rant poses a legitimate question; Is Christian Hackenberg an elite level bust? You have your Jamarcus Russell’s and your Tony Mandarich’s, but at least they got into games and started. Hackenberg wasn’t a top 10 pick but he was so bad in the NFL the Jets had Bryce Petty and Geno Smith start over him. It’s crazy that just a few years ago the Jets were in a predicament where they either needed to start Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty. They’re in a much better spot now with Sam Darnold. The Jets have improved, why hasn’t Christian Hackenberg?
