Women's Sports Former UConn and Liberty Great Swin Cash Hired by the New Orleans Pelicans as Vice President of Basketball Operations/Team Development by Jason Cordner June 11, 2019 In another major advancement for women in professional sports, the New Orleans Pelicans are hiring former UConn and WNBA star Swin Cash for a senior front-office position, which will make the 39-year-old one of the highest-ranking female executives in the sport. https://twitter.com/SwinCash/status/1138201768754593794 Cash was named the vice president of basketball operations and team development, leaving her in charge of scouting and player development among other responsibilities. “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Swin Cash and her family to the New Orleans Pelicans,” David Griffin, the Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations, said in a statement. “Her legendary experience as a player, champion and winner at every level, on and off the floor, represents everything we want this organization to be about. In addition to her background as an executive with the New York Liberty, Swin has a strong reputation as a thought leader in the area of player and human development and her work as a global NBA/WNBA ambassador speaks to her incredible relationships throughout the League family.” The hire makes Cash one of the top-tier females in the NBA and continues a string of strong hires by Griffin. Since becoming executive president of basketball operations, Griffin has been busy trying to stabilize the Pelicans organization in the front office and on the court. He’s also dealing with Anthony Davis’ desires to leave the Pelicans and has a huge draft coming up with Zion Williamson entering the fold. Cash’s hiring follows the addition of Trajan Langdon from the Brooklyn Nets to serve as the Pelicans’ new general manager. Prior to Langdon’s hiring, Aaron Nelson, head of the Phoenix Suns‘ highly regarded training staff for two decades was brought in as the Pelicans’ new vice president of player care and performance. Cash Is Queen Cash is a three-time WNBA champion, winning two with the Detroit Shock in 2003 and 2006 and one with the Seattle Storm in 2010. She finished her playing career with the Liberty in 2016. She was named to the All-WNBA second team in 2003 and 2004 and was the All-Star Game MVP in 2009 and 2011. She is also a two-time NCAA champion back to her days at UConn, where she was the most outstanding player in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Cash won gold medals with the USA women’s team in the 2004 and 2012 Olympics. In 2017, the New York Liberty named Cash director of franchise development. Prior to her rise as an executive, Cash has always been a superstar face of the WNBA and vocal leader in the league’s women empowerment movement.
