Giants’ Will Beatty Tears Pectoral Muscle, Out 5-6 Months

New York Giants offensive tackle Will Beatty tore his pectoral muscle on Wednesday, and will undergo surgery that will keep him out for 5-6 months, according to multiple sources. The injury occurred while Beatty was lifting weights during the team’s offseason conditioning program.

Beatty started every game for the last two seasons at left tackle, including an impressive 2014 season. Given his timetable, he is tentatively expected to return sometime in November.

The Giants will likely turn to either third-year tackle Justin Pugh, first-round pick Ereck Flowers, or veteran free agent addition Marshall Newhouse to protect Eli Manning’s blind side while Beatty recovers.

Pugh seems to be the logical fill-in, as he has more experience than Flowers and more talent than Newhouse. Pugh also has experience on the blind side, serving as the left tackle during his time at Syracuse.

Flowers is viewed as a project with lots of potential, but he will need time to develop. Throwing him into the fire at left tackle would be risky, so don’t expect to see him there unless he really shines in the preseason. Newhouse struggled as a swing tackle for the Bengals last year, but he served as the left tackle in Green Bay for a couple seasons, so the Giants can turn to him if need be.
