Boxing In his MSG debut, Canelo easily dominates Rocky Fielding to win super-middleweight gold Now with two wins in a row, and titles in multiple classes, Canelo can be considered a true middleweight great. by Daniel Yanofsky December 16, 2018 The end result almost seemed inevitable. Even so, there were some that gave Rocky Fielding a chance. If he lasted at least six rounds, he might have had a shot. Unfortunately for him, momentum was not on his side. In front of a sold-out crowd of 20,112 inside Madison Square Garden, Canelo Alvarez defeated Fielding with 2:38 in round three. Moving up a weight, Canelo became the WBA Super-Middleweight Champion. The Winning Moment For @Canelo 💥#CaneloRocky pic.twitter.com/rpOhtmUBPX — DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) December 16, 2018 “What I always want to do is to make the best fight whether they’re for world titles or not,” Canelo stated after the fight. “Right now what I can tell you is that I just want to make the best fights for the public.” One of the highest paid athletes in all of sports, there was a lot riding on this match. After signing a deal with DAZN, a Canelo (51-1-2) loss would have been devastating. He was the golden boy for a Golden Boy / Matchroom Boxing collaboration. Luckily, he put his big boy pants on and didn’t hold back. Immediately in the first round, Canelo knocked down Fielding (27-2) with a plethora of shots to the ribs. That was the expected game plan of Canelo, who is the master of the body shot. It also helped that Fielding was taller than the challenger. In boxing, size can be a disadvantage. The second round was more of the same. Another body shot brought Rocky down. Canelo kept Rocky by the ropes, making him an easy target. While Rocky tried his best to land shots, Canelo would not budge. Even if he received a shiner on his eye, that was nothing for the mighty Canelo. By the third round, it was all over. Four times Fielding was down, the last one would be his downfall. Canelo reigned supreme inside MSG as the fans cheered their hero. Watching a legend like Canelo fight inside MSG was an experience nobody will ever forget. Taking a chance, the 28-year-old can now claim that the entire middleweight division, not a specific aspect of it, is his. If he was to return to The World’s Most Famous Arena, collecting more gold would be his ultimate plan. What is next for Canelo? A Daniel Jacobs fight possibly, or a rematch with GGG. The future is unknown, as Canelo is only worried about his health and his family. In the next few months, we should have a clear idea of what he wants to do. Don’t forget to check the replay on DAZN, just to see new champion exceed expectations.
