Katie Taylor wins a one-sided affair against Rose Volante to unify the WBA, WBO And IBF Titles. Will another title bout or superfight be next?

There’s something about fighting under the bright lights that puts Katie Taylor at another level. Her movement becomes smoother, while her skills transcend to another place. Wherever she went this past Friday inside the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, it was truly something to behold.

Taylor (13-0) bulldozed through Rose Volante to win the WBO Lightweight Title, to go along with the WBA and IBF belts. She is now one win away from being the undisputed champion.

The Matchroom Boxing bout on DAZN lasted nine rounds, but Taylor controlled the entire affair. Volante (14-1) started off strong, pushing Taylor against the ropes early. However, Katie quickly went into another gear, knocking down Volante with a hook early on.

From there, the end result was inevitable. Taylor’s punches were just too much, as she landed numerous left hooks and very aggressive body shots. By the third round Volante’s face was eating Taylor’s hooks. Taylor’s only weakness was that she was keeping her mouth open, but Volante couldn’t come close enough to find a weak point. Combination shots by Taylor to the body and head of Volante was the theme of round four. That continued by round five.

There was a small headbutt in the middle of the fifth that affected Volante, but the fight went on. Eventually, she was starting to tire from the shots, buckling down after each blow. Double rights by Taylor blooded up Volante as round six began, and at this point, Taylor was winning all of the rounds. It was surreal watching a masterpiece being painted literal red by Taylor. By the end of round six Taylor was already landing 47% of her combo punches. The body shots, some that came at rapid fire speeds (five in a row at one point), significantly slowed down Volante.

Round seven and eight saw Taylor becoming more creative with her body shots, landing them with such precision. Another headbutt occurred in round eight, creating an even deeper cut for Volante. Eventually, the referee called the fight off in the ninth, awarding Taylor the sweet victory while also saving Volante.

The 32-year-old “KT” had the crowd behind her the entire time, as she does most of the time when she is in the ring.

What’s next for Katie Taylor? The real fight to make is an Amanda Serrano superfight. After all, Taylor does own a win against her sister Cindy, and Amanda (36-1-1) is on a belt quest of her own, already a seven-weight champion. While Team Taylor would love to face off against Serrano, she does want to be the undisputed champion. In her way? The WBC Champion Delfine Persoon.

“Let’s start talking about that fight. We have to get that next. She (Delfine) has the WBC and I want it,” Taylor stated after the bout. “I would take Amanda Serrano or Cecilia Brækhus but I really want that last belt.”

Either fight would be welcomed on June’s Anthony Joshua v. Jarrell Miller bout inside Madison Square Garden. If Eddie Hearn and company can work a deal out, Taylor would be fighting for the sixth time in as many months; she won four bouts in 2018, one as early as December against Eva Wahlstrom.

History would be on the line in both fights, for various reasons. A Serrano fight brings together two of the best female boxers today. The title fight cements Taylor’s legacy. It will be an interesting few months as the Taylor camp thinks about what is best for one of the best out there today.
