College Kean Football Defeated in Season Opener by Lou Monaco September 5, 2016 Photo Credit: youdontknowjersey.com Junior quarterback Charles App threw for 110 yards and D’Wan McCrary had a 10-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter to pace Kean University in a 26-7 loss to Christopher Newport (Va.) on Sunday in Newport News, Virginia. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the game was pushed to Sunday due to the effects of Tropical Storm Hermine that moved through the Virginia area. App was 13-of-21 on the day, but threw a critical interception on Christopher Newport’s 9-yard line, which was returned for a 95-yard touchdown by junior Justus Drakeford as time ran out to end the first half and extend its lead to 17-7. Moments earlier, Kean junior linebacker Darin Hungerford had recovered a fumble by junior quarterback Ronald Kearney, Jr. and returned it 43 yards to Christopher Newport’s 15-yard line. Christopher Newport University (1-0) scored the final 19 points of the game. Kearney, who completed 14-of-28 passes for 171 yards highlighted by a 39-yard touchdown to Danny Mattson in the first quarter, added a one-yard touchdown run with just five minutes to play to complete Christopher Newport’s scoring. Taylor Loudan had seven catches for 74 yards for Christopher Newport. Brian Matthews had 17 carries for 66 yards and Robert Meade III had 13 tackles to pace the Kean (0-1) defense. The victory was the first for Christopher Newport over Kean in three all-time meetings. The Cougars took the first two matchups, both of which took place in Union, New Jersey. Kean, which plays three of its first four games on the road, visits Bridgewater State (Mass.) University on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a scheduled 12 p.m. kickoff. Bridgewater (0-1) fell to Curry College, 28-24, on Friday in its season opener.
