Making sense of…Trish Stratus/Lita v. Alexa Bliss/Mickie James was the right call for Evolution

While singles matches would have felt good, a tag team match might result in a better outcome for the current and returning ladies involved.

In a twist, WWE will be mixing its past with its present and future. At WWE Evolution, Trish Stratus and Lita will be teaming up against Alexa Bliss and Mickie James. It is a dream match in the world of WWE between four of the best women that have put on a pair of boots inside its ring.

We were originally supposed to have individual matches in Bliss v. Stratus and Lita v. James. After some shenanigans on Monday Night Raw, a tag match combining the Attitude Era’s best was booked. While some question the booking getting to the match, it is one that was wisely created.

Why?

Like Riding a Bike?

For one, ring rust may be an issue for Trish and Lita. Trish’s last tag team match was in 2011, and Lita hasn’t been in a legit one-on-one match in years. The two last competed in the Women’s Royal Rumble back in January, but no in-ring action after that. While they have been training, it is unknown how well they will actually do individually.

However, working together is a different story. By having someone to bounce off of, what you want to do can result in clearer results. Trish didn’t seem so worried about her time away from the ring, however. In an interview with ESPN, the seven-time Women’s Champion described how to handle time away from the ring:

Wrestling is in your blood — it’s like when you ride a bike, you remember to always ride a bike. There’s this adrenaline rush.”

We’ve seen in the past that some can falter without a clear direction. With some guidance, anything is possible.

Injury of Alexa is Unknown

Over the past few days, it has been reported that Alexa Bliss may be working through an injury. It appears she has been diagnosed with a concussion or a broken nose from a live event. Mickie James calmed everyone down with recent comments claiming that Alexa will be in her corner, no matter what.

With growing concerns, Mickie has been known to be a true workhorse. If she needed to handle the majority of the action it wouldn’t be a problem. That is especially true since she knows how to work with Trish and Lita. If anything, old stablemate Alicia Fox could fit into the mix.

Time Constraints

Before the tag match was made, there was set to be a number of matches planned on the Evolution card. Both individual matches would have been taking place along with several title matches. A battle royal was also added, but not until much later. One has to figure that match will get a serious amount of time, right?

As it was stated above, ring rust could be a factor. There may be a minimal amount of time allowed to help with the transition back for both Trish and Lita. WWE could also be trying to set up, as Michael Cole calls it, “vintage” moments. Whether it is Mickie v. Lita or the true throwback, Mickie v. Trish, there are a variety of moves that could be put into play. That doesn’t take so long to set up. Also, a segment where the legends, including Mickie, team up against Alexa in the end isn’t off the table.

Whatever the reason may be for the last-minute tag match, it ended up working out for the best. Sometimes, a small tweak can drastically improve a match. Whether that holds true for all four ladies is up in the air. An old-school feel will be there, one that is never a bad thing when it involves the women’s evolution.

Evolution takes place on October 28 at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, NY. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Coliseum box office or at Ticketmaster.com.
