MBB: Seton Hall readies for Georgetown on ‘80s night

The Seton Hall University Pirates men’s basketball team will host Georgetown University on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The game is set to be ‘80s night for Seton Hall. The matchup will be the 100th between the two longtime BIG EAST schools dating back to 1909.

The Pirates, who are fresh off of wins against Creighton, St. Johns and Marquette will face Georgetown with a chance to move to 7-4 in the BIG EAST and separate themselves from the Hoyas, who also sit at 6-4.

The Pirates have been led by reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Isaiah Whitehead and reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Angel Delgado and are in the midst of a three-game win streak, the first in conference play since 2011.

Seton Hall’s Ishmael Sanogo is also fueling the Pirates with grit and determination and has been receiving great praise from Head Coach Kevin Willard.

“Ish is the hardest working kid I’ve ever seen,” Willard said.

The Pirates will need Sanogo and the rest of the gang to be in full force on Saturday.

The Hoyas will be looking at  D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and LJ Peak to help pace their offense, as the two have put the Hoyas back near the top of the standings.

Both Whitehead and Smith-Rivera rank in the top-five in points and assists in the conference along with Providence standout Kris Dunn.

For Seton Hall, the ‘80s were a time of triumph for the Pirates basketball team as the 1988-89 team appeared in the school’s first-ever National Title game. Here is a look back at some of the players from that team as well as other standouts of the 1980’s in Seton Hall Basketball.

Mark Bryant- All BIG EASTin 1988 and a member of the first Pirate team to appear in the NCAA Tournament.

Dan Callandrillo- Fourth all-time leading scorer (1,985 points), BIG EAST Player of the Year and the nation’s third leading scorer in 1982.

Head Coach P.J. Carlesimo- Coach who led the Pirates to the 1989 Final Four and was the national Coach of the Year. Compiled a 212-166 record in 12 seasons with seven invitations to postseason play.

Terry Dehere- Played in 1989 and is the first Pirate to have his number retired while an active player.

John Morton- Member of 1989 Final Four team who ranks on all-time scoring list (1,621).

Ramon Ramos- Earned First Team All BIG-EAST honors in 1988-89. Scored 1,017 points and recorded 631 rebounds. Is currently first All-time with a field goal percentage of .557.
