Monday Morning Michelle: Madness, NFL Meetings, the Frozen Four and Wrestlemania

This weekend I was in Dallas to attend the first inaugural gala for The Taylor Hooton Foundation.  While in Dallas, I got to hear the former commissioner of the MLB speak about the dangers of appearance and performance enhancing drugs.  I also got to listen to Mark Cuban’s brother Brian speak about his childhood, and recollections about addiction to steroids.  It was a wonderful event, and I invite you to follow @theTHF to learn more about the dangers of these drugs.  You’ll find more information about the foundation at www.taylorhooton.org.

Last night, while traveling I got the chance to check out the The Dallas Morning News.  Information about what was trending in sports included a front page article about the Cowboys opting for Adrian Peterson, and a message from Greg Hardy to Cowboys fans which basically said that he doesn’t care if they don’t like him, because he likes himself.  He also wished that God blessed Dallas, and nowhere else.

What follows is a summary of what was trending on Twitter, while I was attending ‘One Glamorous Night’ in Dallas . . .

What’s Trending this Monday in Sports, besides Seth Rollins? Top trends this weekend continue to be about the madness, MarchMadness that is. The Final Four will be Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke and Michigan State. Yes, that’s right it’s Michigan State, the No. 7 team that has made it all the way to the finish line. According to Kerry Miller, of Bleacher Report, three of those final four have been among the “best teams in the country all season, ranking No. 1, 3 and 4 in the postseason AP poll.  [ I’m going to need to catch up on what happened at WrestleMania!! ]

Although I was unable to watch the madness in action this weekend because I was traveling, my phone was lit up with texts each time I had the opportunity to look at it.  The most significant texts were about the Kentucky game.  Could it have been that there was an upset in the making?  Many were not surprised that Notre Dame played a stellar game against Kentucky. Others seemed stunned.  The Fighting Irish lost by just two, but according to tweets #NotreDame was dominant during much of the second half. Karl Anthony Towns was trending as the nation’s “prime –time” player. According to Dan Wolken, USA Today Sports, “this was one of the greatest games –and almost one of the greatest upsets—in NCAA tournament history. Kentucky was down by five toward the stretch, but managed to pull off a victory and remain undefeated.

In other sporting news, the NFL finished up their annual meetings last week. A list of what was discussed is posted at www.nfl.com this lists includes interesting tidbits about the decision of Adrian Peterson, which should be revealed on April 15, 2015. Additionally, Roger Goodell shared that he has communicated the league’s disciplinary structure to Jameis Winston, discussed that a decision about Greg Hardy will be forthcoming soon, and also talked about potential teams for Los Angeles.

Baseball tweets are starting to be included in the rotations. Opening Day is on deck and the Yankees will plan to go with Masahiro Tanaka on the mound. Yankees fans will know that this is not the norm, as for the past six Opening Day games, the Yanks started with CC Sabathia [ www.espn.go.com ]. Tigers are set to start with David Price.

As for hockey, well I got to hang with some very cool kids who play for Team Toledo, when I was in Dallas to attend the first inaugural gala event in honor of The Taylor Hooton Foundation. Several youth teams were in Dallas for their national tournament. In addition in college hockey, my alma mater advanced to the semi-finals in the Frozen Four. The Terriers are set to play Notre Dame at 8:30 pm on August 9, 2015.   What do you mean you didn’t fill out a Frozen Four bracket? Madness is not confined to basketball alone. Go Terriers!
