The Princeton football team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday and thankfully will never have to face Lehigh senior quarterback Nick Shafinsky again.

Shafinsky completed 29 of 36 passes for 461 yards and four touchdowns to lead Lehigh to a 42-28 victory over Princeton Saturday at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Shafinsky’s 461 yards was the most against Princeton in the span of 35 games, dating back to a 525-yard performance by Cornell’s Jeff Mathews in 2012.

Sophomore running back Charlie Volker led Princeton (1-1) with 13 carries for a career-best 82 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the first half, on runs of 8, 22, and 4 yards.

Junior John Lovett added a 12-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to cap the Tigers’ scoring. Lovett had an all-around complete game with five carries for 75 yards, completed 7 of 9 passes for 59 yards, and added three catches for 21 yards.

The Tigers’ offense gained 442 total yards of offense as senior quarterback Chad Kanoff completed 19 of 31 passes for 184 yards, while senior wide receiver Isaiah Barnes had four receptions for 40 yards.

Princeton hits the road again for its Ivy League opener Saturday at Columbia (0-2) with kickoff scheduled for 12 p.m.
