Saturday’s weather couldn’t have been better for a spring football game. Many of the Rutger’s faithful came out to see what their 2018 Rutgers football team could look like, heading into the summer.

With the annual Scarlet-White game in the books and the Rutgers football team’s offseason now in an interesting but familiar spot, head coach Chris Ash and his coaching staff have a lot of work to do this summer in hopes of competing this fall. Starting with naming a starting quarterback. That choice might have been sealed during the spring game.

Artur Sitkowski was the breakout star from the spring game. His three touchdowns to Melton included a 75-yard strike on the first play of a drive that surely had the fan base swooning. Some of  Sitkowski’s throws couldn’t be made by anyone else on the Rutgers’ roster.

Sitkowski finished his day with 11 completions for 280 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by a 75-yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver Bo Melton.

But even after his strong performance, both he and coach Ash were quick to point out some of the mistakes he made.

“Goods and bads. Obviously he made some big plays, had some big throws. I think you can see the type of arm he has, but he also made some mistakes, had two picks, threw a pick on a screen then made an ill-advised pass on a third down where he got a pick,” Ash said when asked about Sitkowski’s performance.

Bo Melton caught four balls for 187 yards, capping a big spring in the wake of a tough freshman season. Big things were expected as a four-star recruit, but Melton caught just four passes for 87 yards as the passing game struggled as a whole. It is fair to think, assuming good health, that production will increase this fall.

“We made a lot of progress here in the spring, long way to go but I like the progress that we’ve made and the way this team’s come together,” Ash said.
