Ranking the Phillies Top Ten Prospects

Alec Bohm

Age: 23 Position: 3B 2019 Level: A,A+,AA

2019 Stats: .305 BA, 80 RBI’s, 21 HR

Alec Bohm, the Phillies first round draft pick from 2018, has quickly climbed through the farm system. He reached Double-A in 2019, his first full season, and played in the All-Star Futures Game in Washington, D.C. The Wichita State product has a quick and powerful bat, and his power and hit tools are among the best in professional baseball. Bohm will likely be in the big leagues by the end of 2020, but his defense, which is has not developed quite as well as his bat, may slow him down.

Spencer Howard

Age: 23 Position: RHP 2019 Level: A+,AA

2019 Stats: 3-1, 2.03 ERA, 71IP, 94 K’s

Spencer Howard has been lights out in pro ball since his debut in 2017. Despite a shoulder injury in 2019 which kept him off the mound for about two months, his season was as good as it gets. Barring injury, Howard will be in the Phillies rotation at some point in 2020.

Fransisco Morales

Age: 20 Position: RHP 2019 Level: A

2019 Stats: 1-8, 3.82 ERA, 96.2 IP, 129 K’s

Fransisco Morales repertoire features a fastball and slider, though both dominant pitches, they are not enough for Morales to continue as a starter. He has a big league arm, but likely as a reliever. Morales’s pinpoint control has been his best friend when he has it. He is young and has a lot of developing to do, so don’t expect to see him in the big leagues until at least 2022.

Bryson Stott

Age: 22 Position: SS 2019 Level: ROK, A-

2019 Stats: .295 BA, 27 RBI’s, 6 HR

Stott, the Phillies first rounder in 2019, impressed with his offensive and defensive consistency his pro debut with Williamsport. The lefty hitting shortstop has drawn comparisons to Giants Gold-Glover Brandon Crawford, both are strong defensively and hit well to all parts of the field with the ability to show some power at the plate. Current Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius is only on a one year deal, so the Phils’ could rush Stott up the system for him to be their starter in 2021 (which is not anticipated), but who they acquire to be their shortstop in the future will likely decide how quickly Stott moves up through the organization.

Luis Garcia

Age: 19 Position: SS 2019 Level: A

2019 Stats: .186 BA, 36 RBI’s, 9 SB

Luis Garcia was one of the top international prospects during the 2017 signing period, and the Phillies were able to acquire him for $2.5 million. Garcia proved his worth in his pro debut, winning the GCL batting title with a .369 batting average, while also stealing 12 bases in 43 games. To begin 2019, the Phillies sent Garcia to the Lakewood Blue Claws(A), where the average age in the league was 21.5, while Garcia was only 18. In a league with older, more experienced players, Garcia struggled, batting .186 on the season. I would expect to see Garcia return to Lakewood in 2020, but he still has a lot of developing to do, so I would not expect to see him in a Phillies uniform until at least September 2022.

Adonis Medina

Age: 23 Position: RHP 2019 Level: AA

2019 Stats: 7-7, 4.92 ERA, 105.2 IP, 82 K’s

An international signing in 2014, Medina was dominant over his first four seasons in the Phillies organization, earning a spot on MLB’s top 100 prospect list as a 20 year old. In his minor league career, Media has posted a 3.60 era and has earned appearances in two MILB All-Star games and a Futures Game. The right-handed starter will likely start the season in Triple-A, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in a big league uniform by the end of 2020. Considering his repertoire features a mid-upper 90’s fastball with a slider and changeup, I would expect Medina to pitch out of the bullpen at the big league level, but he may be a spot-starter if need be.

Nick Maton

Age: 23 Position: 3B 2019 Level: A+,AA

2019 Stats: .266 BA, 51 RBI’s, 7 HR, 12 SB

Nick Maton has been one of the more under the radar prospects for the Phillies. The 2017 seventh round pick has quietly done damage at every level he has played at, reaching Double-A in a 2019 season which saw him hit .266 with seven home runs. Maton plays defensive with an above average glove, and though primarily a shortstop he has experience playing second and third base. Maton has a plus bat and above average speed, but his clutch hitting has set him apart. In 2019, Maton hit .367 with runners in scoring position. The 23 year old could be a candidate to replace Didi Gregorius at shortstop in 2021, but could also serve as a reliable utility type of player off the bench in the future.

Enyel De Los Santos

Age: 24 Position: 2019 Level: AAA, MLB

2019 Stats (AAA): 5-7, 4.40 ERA, 94 IP, 83 K’s

Acquired in the Freddy Galvis trade before the 2018 season, Enyel De Los Santos dominated to begin his tenure with the Phillies, posting a 2.63 era in the hitter friendly International League before earning a big league call-up by the end of the season. De Los Santos saw similar numbers in 2019, where he was shuttled between Philadelphia and Triple-A, but did not exceed rookie status. If able to stay in the big leagues, De Los Santos could see time either as a late rotation starter or backend reliever, both of which he has experience with.

Rafael Marchan

Age: 21 Position: C 2019 Level: A,A+

2019 Stats: .261 BA, 23 RBI’s, 20 2B

From the naked eye, you would not expect 5 ‘9 170 lbs Rafael Marchan to be one of the best defensive catchers in the minor leagues…but he is. Initially a shortstop, Marchan was put behind the plate due to his well above average arm, and in 2019 he threw out more than ⅓ of runners attempting to steal. Marchan has a decent bat to go with his above average defense, but improving at the plate could be what gets him over the hump and to the big leagues.

Mickey Moniak

Age: 21 Position: OF 2019 Level: AA

2019 Stats: .252 BA, 67 RBI’s, 11 HR, 15 SB

Mickey Moniak was the first overall draft pick in the 2016 MLB draft out of high school. Now 21 and heading into his 5th season of pro ball, Moniak is looking to finally become a piece of the Phillies big league roster. After struggles at the plate in ‘17 and ‘18, Moniak had his best season at the plate in 2019, hitting .252 with 67 RBI’s, but in order to make it to the big league level, Moniak is going to have to cut down on strikeouts, which he had 111 of in 2019.
