The case for Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair to main event Evolution

This Sunday, two of the best female wrestlers in WWE today will be going to war at NYCB’s Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York. Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair, two former friends, try to settle their rivalry with a Last Women’s Standing match at Evolution. It is another first for the women, in WWE at least, and so far the booking has been superb. With all that has been done to get to where we are, however, there are concerns whether this is the main event of the show or not.

Due to their star power, it makes sense if the company was to make Ronda Rousey v. Nikki Bella for the Raw Women’s Championship as the main event of Evolution. Ronda is the cash cow and Nikki has a recognizable brand. That doesn’t mean it is the right move to make.

Here is why Becky and Charlotte, not Ronda and Nikki, should main event the all-women’s PPV.

Celebrating the Future

This past week, WWE has been releasing video’s on YouTube showcasing women’s wrestling. One is a fatal four-way for the NXT Women’s Title while the other is a game-changing triple threat for the new Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 32. The latter signified the end of the phrase “diva” for good. Both feature Charlotte and Becky. These two were around for two of the top moments for women in WWE.

“The. Now. Forever” is WWE’s way of celebrating the past, present and future. The two graduates from NXT represent what Evolution is all about.

Hungry for the Spotlight

For years, women’s wrestling has taken a back seat to whatever the men may be doing. In a sense, creative had nothing special planned for them. Since the rise of NXT, women are at the forefront of WWE programming. With each opportunity Becky and Charlotte had, they knew they had to fight hard to keep their momentum up.

When speaking to The Baltimore Sun, Becky discussed her desire to be the very best. The importance of being in the spotlight for specific opportunities have been a driving force for her:

[It’s] Absolutely [important to me to main event Evolution]. But it’s important to me that I main event every show. I want to be the main event of all shows. That’s what I came over to do — to be the main event of WrestleMania, to be the main event of SmackDown, to be the main event of Raw, to be the main event of every single pay-per-view. And especially for something that’s this historic, I feel like myself and Charlotte have had such a storied history that it only seems fitting that we main event.”

Every PPV the ladies perform on now has a chance to be a match of the night contender, especially when Charlotte and Becky are involved. Would they be able to top all that is happening this Sunday? If given the golden baton, it is not entirely impossible.

The Story is Pure

A few years ago, Charlotte turned on Becky, saying she held her back. There were plenty of emotions involved, and their overall wrestling ability made the short feud work.

Now, the tables have turned. In a justified move, Becky attacked Charlotte after the latter won the SmackDown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. She (creative) inserted herself into Becky’s one-on-one match with Carmella, taking Becky’s opportunity away. Becky is not even a heel in all of this as the crowd supports her every move. Think of her as the female “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, something the WWE definitely needs.

While Nikki and Ronda’s bickering can lead to mainstream coverage, it doesn’t feel as authentic as the rivalry between Becky and Charlotte. Today’s wrestling fan loves some drama, but when you kick it up a notch as these two have, you have yourself a recipe for success.

The revolution has brought upon an evolution in women’s programming in WWE. Two stars who have shined the brightest, Charlotte and Becky, are innovators when it comes to the movement. Why not give these women a chance to close the show they worked hard to make happen?
