Football Who Will Be The Next Jets Quarterback? The Jets are not going to win with Geno Smith under center. by Stephen Ur April 20, 2015 Mandatory Credit: Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports The Jets are not going to win with Geno Smith under center, he’s proved that over the past two seasons. He was an elite quarterback when he played at the University of West Virginia. The Jets saw that he was good, too, but he has not proved to be as good as the other quarterback that plays at Metlife Stadium during the Fall. I gave up all hope on Geno Smith when he threw three interceptions in the first quarter of a home loss to the Buffalo Bills. I think that the time has come for the Jets to move on from him, as well. The question now is, who will they look into in this year’s draft? Jameis Winston will most likely be going first overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so the Jets should not be looking into him. Marcus Mariota, however, would be a good addition to the Jets offense, who have acquired Brandon Marshall from the Chicago Bears this offseason. Mariota is not only elusive through the air, but also on the ground. He is quick on his feet, and can run if he doesn’t see that any of his receivers are open. I don’t think Mariota will fall as low as sixth, however, so the next quarterback that the Jets could look at is UCLA’s Brett Hundley. Hundley has stats that resembled Mariota’s. He threw for an astonishing 38 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. In an NFL season, which is 16 games compared to NCAA’s 12, that’s just under seven interceptions, which is very impressive on it’s own. As for the 38 touchdowns in 12 games, that’s an NFL average of 51 touchdown passes, which would break Brady’s second all-time record. Having Brett Hundley with what numbers he could put up against Tom Brady and the numbers we know he can put up, the AFC East could be one of the tightest divisions in the 2015 NFL season.
