Villanova, which won the 2016 National Championship, captured both the Big East regular season and tournament titles in 2016-17. The Wildcats were upset in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 32, but Butler and Xavier advanced to the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, respectively. Seton Hall Getting Some Love For the first time since 2010, Seton Hall is actually predicted to do some damage in the Big East. Seton Hall is getting a ton of love from the Big East coaches and press. One coach gave the Pirates a first-place vote: Providence’s Ed Cooley. “That was me,” Cooley said. “They have veterans. They know how to win. They’ve won in this building, they’ve won a (Big East) championship. And they’re men — they’ve got dudes, man.” The senior-heavy Pirates, coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths, were picked to finish second in the conference behind four-time defending regular-season champion Villanova, their highest projection since the 2000-01 campaign. They placed two players, senior starters Khadeen Carrington and Angel Delgado, on the league’s first team and the Pirates were ranked No. 23 when the preseason polls were released this week. The seniors have rebuilt Seton Hall, leading a floundering program to consecutive tournament berths for the first time since 1993-94, and the school’s first Big East Tournament title in 23 years back in 2016. They have yet, however, to win a tournament game. “We definitely want to get to a Final Four, we want to win [another] Big East championship, we want to win a regular-season title,” said Carrington, Seton Hall’s leading scorer (17.1 PPG) a year ago. “We want to raise all the banners. There’s no next year for us.” The Preseason Big East Awards Announced At media day, the Big East announced its Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and All-Big East Teams. Villanova junior point guard Jalen Brunson was named the preseason Player of the Year. Brunson averaged 14.1 points and 4.1 assists last season for the Wildcats. He guided Villanova to a 32-4 record and to Big East regular season and tournament titles. Last season, he was named a All-Big East First Team selection. As for the Freshman of the Year award, the Big East went with another Wildcat, Omari Spellman. The 6-foot-9 center had to sit out last season per NCAA rules, but was able to practice with the team. A five-star recruit coming out of high school, he will finally be able to showcase his talents this year. As for the first and second teams: Big East First Team: Kelan Martin, Butler Marcus Foster, Creighton Khadeen Carrington, Seton Hall Angel Delgado, Seton Hall Trevon Bluiett, Xavier Big East Second Team: Markus Howard, Marquette Rodney Bullock, Providence Kyron Cartwright, Providence Marcus LoVett, St. John’s Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s Mikal Bridges, Villanova Post Views: 1,710 The following two tabs change content below.BioLatest Posts Jason Cordner Latest posts by Jason Cordner (see all) Lebron James Leaves Coca-Cola To Sign With Pepsi - March 22, 2021 WNBA Rolling Out Red Carpet For Upcoming 25th Anniversary Season - March 16, 2021 Nike Partners with National Urban League to Promote Employment and Home Ownership for the Black Community - March 15, 2021 Rob Gronkowski Gets In On NFT Collection Movement, Becomes First Athlete To Do So - March 10, 2021 Related TopicsAngel DelgadoBig EastBig East BasketballCollege BasketballEd CooleyFeatureJalen BrunsonKhadeen CarringtonMedia DayOmari SpellmanSeton HallVillanova 1 Comment You must be logged in to post a comment Login Leave a Reply Cancel replyYou must be logged in to post a comment.
