Rutgers Field Hockey awaits possible NCAA Selection after falling in Big Ten Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Rutgers Women’s Field Hockey team fell 1-0 to No. 23 Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon, dropping their record to 13-5.

The only goal of the game came from an Ohio State shot with 1:31 left in double-overtime.

During regulation play, the Scarlet Knights were out-shot by the Buckeyes by 10 shots, with only four shot attempts and three shots on goal.

Head coach Meredith Civico recognizes that her team’s difficulties on offense may have set them back from performing how they intended to during their fast breaks.

“We couldn’t create offensively the way we wanted to,” Civico said. “We weren’t able to create corner opportunities and we weren’t able to create shot opportunities.”

With their offense remaining dismal, the Rutgers defense had no other choice but to stay attentive as the physical Ohio State team attempted to capitalize on their 11 penalty corner opportunities.

While her team only had two penalty corner shot opportunities, sophomore goalkeeper Gianna Glatz was forced to bring her A-game to lift her teammates up on both sides of the field.

Glatz, the Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch, recorded eight saves in regulation play and four in overtime. This performance was one goal shy of her season high record of 12 saves.

Glatz has served as a key component to the Scarlet Knights’ victories this season and her coach expects her to only get better.

“She is a true professional. I think she came to Rutgers because she wanted to make a difference in this program,” Civico said of Glatz.  “I think she is only going to continue to get better.”

Although Rutgers suffered a loss, they still have a chance to show that they deserve to stay in contention.

The Scarlet Knights must wait to see if they will be awarded an at-large bid during the NCAA Selection Show.

Coach Civico has high hopes and expects the team to excel if granted this opportunity.

“Our team has done really well this season and we’ve had some really big wins. We’ll train this week and prepare for it and see what happens,” said Civico.
