Big Ten Women's Basketball Riding High Entering February

It’s been a big year for Big Ten women’s basketball. Iowa’s Melissa Dixon leads the nation with 3.95 three-pointers per game. Other recognizable Big Ten players include Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell, who leads the nation with 28 points per game and second in the nation with 3.82 3-pointers per game.

Players are not the only ones making the Big Ten stand out in the NCAA. Rutgers head coach Vivian Stringer can become the all-time winningest head coach in Big Ten women’s history if the Scarlet Knights win their next game on Thursday against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Two Big Ten teams set an NCAA record on January 29 when Iowa and Northwestern combined for 32 three-pointers! Melissa Dixon scored nineteen of those three-pointers, and Northwestern’s Ashley Deary was 5-5 from beyond the line. Iowa went on to win the game by a score of 102-99.

The Maryland Terrapins have been the best team in the Big Ten thus far. They are undefeated in the conference, and are riding a thirteen-game winning streak. They are definitely a threat going into the tournament. The women’s Big Ten tournament will run from March 4-8 in Illinois.
