College ECAC Women’s Basketball Tournament First Round Recap – Brooklyn, Widener Advance by Gregg Snyder February 28, 2019 The 2019 ECAC Women’s Basketball Championship began with first round games played Wednesday night. Games were hosted at higher seeded team gyms. Local institutions, Cabrini University and New York University had received byes into the quarterfinals. Other locals, Drew University, Brooklyn College, Neumann University, and Widener University hit the hardwood Wednesday night looking to advance. Brooklyn and Widener would accomplish that feat and live to see another day. Drew was on the losing end of an 80-67 game against Stevenson University and Neumann also saw their season come to an end. In Brooklyn, the Bulldogs easily advanced with a 77-47 win over Neumann. The Bulldogs used a 10-2 run to close out the first quarter with an 18-11 lead. Much of the second quarter was a back and forth affair with both teams making runs of their own. The Bulldogs however got the last attack, a 12-0 run to take 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. Brooklyn would pull away quickly in the second half, leaving no doubt on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs were led by Chanel Jemmott who recorded a game high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor George added 16 points. The Bulldogs will face Grove City College in the Quarterfinals on Friday, March 1 at Cabrini College. The Widener Pride went on an 11-0 run to open their first round game against Wilson College and really never looked back. The Pride saw 11 players reach double-digit scoring, led by Devan Rimmer’s 11. Another big run to open the second quarter gave the Pride a 20-point lead. Their largest lead of the game was 26, in the fourth quarter. The Pride’s defense set the tone in this matchup and prevented Wilson from getting into any kind of groove offensively. Widener forced 22 turnovers and outrebounded Wilson 45-31. Widener will face Misericodia University on Friday in the quarterfinals at Cabrini College.
