College Hamilton Named to Outland Watch List by Staff Post July 10, 2015 After being named to the Bednarik Award watch list earlier this week, senior defensive tackle Darius Hamilton picked up his second watch list recognition this week, now being named to the Outland Trophy watch list the Football Writers Association of America announced Friday. DT Darius Hamilton – CHRIS PEDOTA/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER NorthJersey.com The Outland Trophy is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate interior lineman (defensive tackle, offensive guard, center, and tackle). Hamilton is one of 25 defensive tackles to be named to the list, and one of 81 total. According to the release, “The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.” The winner will be named on Dec. 10. The team’s Defensive MVP a year ago, Hamilton was the heart and soul of the defense, and began to show why he was a former five-star recruit coming out of the high school despite being on the smaller side compared to other defensive tackles and opposing offensive linemen. The 6-4, 260-pound linemen led the team with 11.5 tackles for loss last season, with 45 total tackles including a career high 32 solo stops. Hamilton, the son of former New York Giants great Keith Hamilton, also recorded six sacks a year ago. Hamilton was also crucial in sealing a come-from-behind victory over Maryland in their final drive – showing why he has the nickname “the hammer”. He also blocked a field goal attempt in the team’s Quick Lane Bowl game victory over North Carolina. The award is named after former Penn All-American lineman John Outland.
