NEWARK – Monmouth got off to an early lead, but No. 23 Seton Hall woke up and ended the first half on a 22-7 run en route to a 75-65 victory over Monmouth at the Prudential Center on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams exchanged leads seven times over the first 13 minutes. Junior forward Diago Quinn opened the scoring with a hook shot over Seton Hall’s senior center Angel Delgado as Monmouth jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Hall answered with a sophomore guard Myles Powell jumper to tie the game at two at 19:10. Delgado made one foul shot to give the Pirates their first lead, 3-2 at 18:43, but redshirt junior guard Micah Seaborn responded with his first of two 3-pointers to give Monmouth a 5-3 lead. Junior forward Pierre Sarr followed up with a layup to give the Hawks a 5-point advantage. Seton Hall cut the deficit to one with a 3-pointer by senior forward Desi Rodriguez and a redshirt sophomore guard Louie Pillari layup gave Monmouth a 9-6 lead into the first media timeout.

Powell and Pillari exchanged jump shots and back-to-back Seton Hall layups by junior forward Michael Nezi and senior guard Khadeen Carrington gave the Pirates the lead back. Seaborn responded with a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 14-12 lead, but Powell followed up with a 3-pointer to give the Hall a one point lead at the under-12 media timeout.

A Seaborn jump shot gave Monmouth the lead back at 10:24, but Seton Hall went on a 7-0 run with a pair of Carrington free throws, a freshman guard Myles Cale 3-pointer and a Carrington layup to give the Pirates a six-point lead at 9:05.

Monmouth freshman guard Deion Hammond attempted to keep the Hawks in the game as he knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers over a two minute span, but the Pirates had an answer for all three with two Delgado jumpers and a 3-pointer from Powell, giving the Hall a four point lead at 6:41. The Pirates closed the first half on a 22-7 run and didn’t look back from there.

Hammond led the Hawks with 17 points in 21 minutes off the bench. The true freshman has scored double-figures in his first two collegiate games after putting up 13 against Bucknell on Nov. 10 and he finished 3-for-6 from deep. Seaborn added 16 on 4-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

Four Pirates scored in double-figures led by Powell, who finished with 18 points on 7-for-13 from the floor and 4-9 from deep. Delgado had a double-double, the 52nd of his career, on 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Carrington had 14 points and Nezi added 10 on 4-for-5 shooting.

The Hawks (1-1) will look to bounce back when they travel to Bethlehem, PA to take on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Tuesday, Nov. 14 for a 7 p.m. tip at Stabler Arena. Seton Hall (2-0) will host Indiana on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Prudential Center at 6:30 p.m.
