The 2018 Dodgeball World Cup took place inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, August 4.

The tournament consisted of the top 10 nations from all over the World including USA, Canada, Austria, Egypt, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Singapore, South Africa and Australia. Throughout the day, the teams competed in men’s, women’s and mixed competitions.

One of the most exciting matches was Northern Ireland’s victory over Egypt after a major comeback. We asked if they had any superstitions or rituals or if it was just the luck of the Irish. They confirmed it was both.

Each team had their own style of preparing for upcoming matches, some relaxed individually while others gathered together for a pep talk.  Team Australia had a group stretching and meditation-like session that we joined in on.

Austria, who advanced to be the champions of the 2018 Dodgeball World Cup let us be a part of their practice drills before the finals.

Although it was great to see teams from around the world, the highlight of the day was a charity match between two of New York’s bravest teams, the NYPD and NYFD. The crowd got to see New York’s finest battle it out on the court for a great cause. The brothers came together to raise awareness for FDNY members who have died from 9/11-related illnesses. The close match ended with a victory for the Police Department.

After spending the day at the Dodgeball World Cup we learned that this sport is so much more than the game we played in elementary school gym class and that Ben Stiller movie!
