New Ownership for the XFL; League Officially Sold to The Rock

It’s official — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is now a proud owner of the XFL.

“The deal is official closed and ‘the keys’ to the XFL have been handed over,” he tweeted. “I humbly accept and promise to put my callouses to hard work building our new brand. Congrats to my partners @DanyGarciaCo & #GerryCardinale and our sharp, hungry team. #XFLOwner #ForTheLoveofFootball.”

XFL ownership doesn’t stop there. Johnson’s business partner and ex-wife Dany Garcia also voiced her excitement on Twitter about being part-owner of the XFL. She wrote, “The deal is officially closed! Excited and humbled to be the first woman to ever own an American major sports league. A big thank you to @TheRock & #GerryCardinale & our incredible teams for all their work the past few months. More #bigmoves to come! #xflowner #ForTheLoveOfFootball.”

As previously reported, Johnson, Garcia and private equity investment firm RedBird Capital bought the XFL months after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. Gerry Cardinale is RedBird Capital’s founder and managing partner. Johnson’s former boss, WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon founded the football league.

It was confirmed by ESPN that the sale of the XFL to Johnson, Garcia and RedBird Capital was officially approved August 7 in a Delaware bankruptcy court. XFL ownership was sold to all three parties for a total of $15 million.  Johnson and Garcia will have a “hands-on approach” in overseeing the XFL, with alleged plans to relaunch the football league in 2021.
