Feature Philadelphia Union Tear Timbers Apart, Continue the Climb up Eastern Conference Standings by Jayson Love July 11, 2015 from fineartamerica.comPPL Park is becoming a home field advantage for Union After a scoreless first half that saw the Union fire 11 shots at the goal, the Union found the target three times en route to a 3-0 drubbing of Portland Timbers at PPL Park. The Union once sat at the bottom of the Eastern conference of MLS and had the Sons of Ben calling out ownership, and ownership battling back. However, they have steadily turned their play around and now sit in 7th place just a point out of a playoff spot but additionally, just 4 points from 2nd place in the conference. One of the big reasons for the turnaround has been Brian Sylvestre who has settled down the goalie situation and picked up another clean sheet tonight notching four saves. The Union fired 17 shots including 7 on target and got a goal from Andrew Wenger and a brace from Vincent Nogueira to wipe out the Portland Timbers. After Wenger opened the Union’s account in the 69th minute, 2 minutes later, they doubled their advantage. A perfect passing play saw Cristián Maidana slot the ball to the centre of the box where Nogueira found himself open to fire into the Timbers’ goal – Maidana had 3 assists on the night. The Union next travel to Toronto to face the squad they trail for the last playoff spot in the East.
