College Rutgers Lands QB Russo by Staff Post May 18, 2015 scarletnation.com Head coach Kyle Flood earned a commitment Monday afternoon as Archbishop Wood (Pa.) quarterback Anthony Russo pledged to the Scarlet Knights. Russo chose the State University of New Jersey over offers from Temple, UConn, Buffalo, and a couple FCS level schools. The three-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite last visited Rutgers last Thursday, and waited to see where Maryland commit and four-star signal caller Dwayne Haskins Jr. would land being Rutgers was one of his finalists. The Pennsylvania native thew for 1,551 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions a year ago guiding his team to a PIAA AAA state championship and a 14-1 overall record. While redshirt sophomores Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig are battling for the starting job this season, it is most likely the winner of the battle this year will continue to play until they graduate unless one or more of the younger quarterbacks on the roster improves. Behind Laviano and Rettig are redshirt freshman Giovanni Rescigno and incoming freshman Mike Dare. Neither of the two plus Russo are highly regarded prospects like Haskins, so the expectations are not there which might be the best thing for the young guys under center. Rutgers currently has two Archbishop Wood products on the roster in tight end Nick Arcidiacono and running back Desmon Peoples. Russo talked about his commitment at a small ceremony at his school saying, “I don’t care if I am a five-star or a two-star,” Russo said according to scarletnation.com. “I didn’t need every offer in the country, I just needed the right one. I feel like with Rutgers, I got the right offer that I needed.” The 6-3, 215-pound Russo becomes the fifth member of the 2016 recruiting class, joining running back Trey Snead, offensive tackle Nick Krimin, Dr. Phillips linebacker Jonathan Pollock, and wide receiver Mo Jabbie.
