For many, charitable work comes natural. While their husbands receive the recognition for their play on the field, these women work just as hard to provide support to the local communities. The Texas Rangers’ wives have raised over $20K in a Mystery Ball Sale last season to open a new chapter of empowerHER, a nonprofit organization first created in Boston, MA. empowerHER is one of the only nonprofit organizations in the U.S. serving girls and young women of mother loss in a community-based, non-therapeutic and volunteer-driven model. Jenna and Jeff Mathis kick started the Southwest chapter creation and along with the Texas Rangers’ wives are eager to expand the sense of community for girls who have suffered the devastating loss of their mothers. “empowerHER is near and dear to my heart,” said Jenna Mathis. “I recently lost my mother and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. The silver lining in my grief was learning to be thankful for and appreciate the time that I had with my mom for much of my life. It’s heartbreaking to imagine a young girl growing up without her mother, knowing the heartache that goes along with such a significant loss. If I can help support the girls of empowerHER in even the smallest way, I’ll give it everything I’ve got!” The mission of the organization is to empower, support, and connect girls and young women up to age 24 who have experienced the loss of their mothers. empowerHER offers in-person and virtual EVENTS for GIRLS and a unique and one-of-a-kind MENTOR PROGRAM designed to reduce isolation and remind girls they are not alone in their grief.
