Boxing Whatever It Takes: Breaking Down Shields v. Hammer Who will walk away the true undisputed women’s middleweight champion? by Daniel Yanofsky April 13, 2019 Tonight (April 13), history will be made. Two of the best female fighters boxing has to offer will step inside the ring to prove who is the undisputed middleweight champion. Will Claressa Shields, the loud and confident 23-year-old from Michigan dethrone Germany’s dominant champion in Christina Hammer? Women main eventing a show seemed impossible just a few years ago, but now it is a reality. With the backing of Showtime, Salita Promotions and Mark Taffet, Boardwalk Hall is about to be a part of something special. When it comes to Claressa Shields (8-0), it is all about how she can handle the much more experienced Hammer. While she only has a few pro fights under her belt, she has twice as many amateur fights to tout about. Shields’ precision is scary to watch and although she doesn’t have knockout power, she’s getting stronger each day. Look back at her fights against Hannah Rankin and Femke Hermans and you’ll see how she gets into their head as the bell first rings. On the other side, we have the international sensation in Christina Hammer (24-0). With 11 knockouts, the Hammer name has a legitimate meaning. Her poised nature is also something to consider, as she has shown no signs of backing away. Just ask Tori Nelson, Elene Sikmashvili (her last win via KO), and Kali Reis, twice. With only two minutes a round to prove their worth, this will all come down to who is the aggressor. Shields has been known to progress as the rounds go on, but will Hammer be able to take advantage of the one irredeemable quality Shields possesses? One thing is for sure: Showtime may be taking a gamble with this fight, but these women have proven they are willing to go to war. The reason? To prove that women’s boxing is stronger than ever. To “fight like a girl” will have a whole new meaning after tonight. And that truly is best for the sport of boxing.
