Boxing World Boxing Super Series and DAZN agree to a major deal to promote events in the U.S. by Daniel Yanofsky July 5, 2018 After securing a deal with both Matchroom Boxing and Bellator MMA, streaming service DAZN wasn’t even close to being done. They are expanding their market, announcing another landmark deal with boxing. In a press release, it was announced that they would be streaming season two of the World Boxing Super Series in America. All 15 fight nights of season two of the WBSS will be included. A three-year contract was announced, which will allow features with fighters and select matches on the DAZN service. It is expected to be a hefty sum, even with no announced number. Considering the prices announced in the Matchroom deal and the expected amount in the Bellator deal, we are sure for a big payout. The WBSS involves tournament-style matches in three different weight divisions: bantamweight, super lightweight and one TBA. The ultimate prize for the winner? The Muhammad Ali Trophy. Season two will begin in September 2018 after season one had a successful run in late 2017. DAZN CEO James Rushton has been on a roll as of late. He discussed the latest deal with the hottest thing in boxing today and what it means for American fans: “As a platform built for the fans, DAZN has been mining boxing chats and forums to see how we can bring immediate value to the community. It became obvious that Americans felt left out of the terrific action and thrilling competition on display in the World Boxing Super Series. To that end, we’re happy to announce that we’ll stream every fight of all three tournaments. Keep an eye out for more announcements soon. This is just the beginning.” Several fights have already been announced. A middleweight match between George Groves and Callum Smith will be taking place. Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev will be fighting in a cruiserweight (not shown on 205 Live) matchup as well. As more fights are expected to be announced, it is another reminder that boxing in the U.S. has never been as hot as it is now. DAZN is looking to take advantage of the situation by creating a mega-market for fans all over the world. As a result, the WBSS is expected to become a major success for both the sport and the OTT company.
