College Series Sweep Clinches Big East Tournament Spot for Seton Hall Baseball by Staff Post May 24, 2016 Shane McCarthy (Seton Hall Athletics) Seton Hall baseball has a knack for the dramatic. Little more than a year ago on May 15, 2015 the Pirates met the Georgetown Hoyas for a doubleheader at Owen T. Carroll field to conclude the regular season schedule. The series essentially represented a berth in the Big East tournament. The Pirates trailed 5-2 late in that game before completing a 2-out, 4-run rally to stun the Hoyas. The dramatic win coupled with a loss by Butler sealed the deal and ensured the Pirates were one of four Big East tournament bound teams. This year, the situation was strikingly similar. This year the Pirates traveled to Butler for a three-game series to wrap up their regular-season slate. They left on a mission. Knowing they needed two wins, they swept the series and punched their ticket once again to the Big East tournament. The three-game weekend series featured many important elements of the Pirates season long success. Timely steals, and deep successful starts from their pitching staff helped the Pirates get it done this past weekend in Indianapolis allowing them to sweep the Bulldogs and clinch the number-3 seed in the tournament. The Big East tournament this year will be played at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. Play begins Thursday May 26 with matchups between 2-seed Creighton, and 3-seed Pirates. The other matchup Thursday will feature 1-seed Xavier and 4-seed St. John’s. This weekend will mark Seton Hall’s 22nd trip to the Big East Tournament, second-most in conference history.
