Peacocks Davauhnte Turner Sets New Career-High of 34 Points in First Home Loss To Rider

Saint Peter’s men’s basketball’s guard Davauhnte Turner put on a performance for the second game in a row, topping his career-high in points by scoring 34 on Thursday night against hOURglass Rival Rider University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Despite the performance, the Peacocks fell short, 88-84, resulting in an 8-10 overall record and 2-5 in the MAAC.

Nick Griffin followed Turner with 17 points, both Elijah Gonzales and Quinn Taylor added a nine points to the board while Taylor also tallied nine boards. Nnamdi Enechionyia led SPU with a career-best eight assists.

Dimencio Vaughn scored his own career-high 34 points for Rider (12-7, 5-2 MAAC). Tyere Marshall chipped in with 15 points while added in another 13 points for the Broncs.

The Broncs got the early jump but the Peacocks went on a 6-0 run to keep it close at 15-10. Rider regained the 16-15 lead but SPU got hot off six made shots from downtown, leading at 37-26. Turner made four of the six shots while Taylor and Samuel Idowu chipped in with one each.

Saint Peter’s kept a strong lead going into the half, 43-37, and Turner scored 18 points in 16 minutes for the Peacocks.

Rider had the jump on SPU again in the beginning of the second half and owned it for the rest of the game.

Saint Peter’s trailed 68-53 after being outscored 31-10 by the eight-minute break. SPU slowly caught up with a 7-0 run to only trail 68-60, but Rider stretched their advantage to 10 points, leading 75-65.

Turner fought back with five more points and a layup by Taylor, cutting the deficit to 75-72. The Broncs extended their lead by another 10 but Griffin continued his streak from behind the arc and Turner added four more to the board for the Peacocks, getting within one possession, 84-82, with 42.3 seconds remaining.

Rider’s Stevie Jordan made two from behind the line and secured their victory with a layup.

This marked the first home loss of the season, dropping to 5-1 at the Yanitelli Center and the third consecutive loss for Saint Peter’s.

The Peacocks will regroup on Sunday, January 21 against Manhattan at noon.
