College Chris Laviano Has Edge in Rutgers QB Competition by Stephen Ur June 1, 2015 With Gary Nova working his way into the NFL, Chris Laviano is now the only Rutgers QB to have playing experience – despite it just being the second half of the game against Nebraska last season when Nova went out with an injury. Head coach Kyle Flood said the small playing experience gives Laviano an advantage in the competition between the three quarterbacks on the roster. While Laviano is a third-year sophomore at Rutgers University, his competition is not even from New Jersey. One of the other QBs on the Rutgers roster, Hayden Rettig, is a transfer from Louisiana State University, and he is also working to become the Rutgers next starting QB. He is also a third-year sophomore. In the middle of these two third-year sophomores, there is a redshirt freshman looking to prove he is the best candidate for the starting QB job. Giovanni Rescigno has proved to coach Flood that he is capable of being his next QB. While the competition heats up, there is still a lot of work to do for these three, so we may not know who the starter will be until days before the first game.
