Soccer NYCFC falls to Union by Stefany Romero August 19, 2018 NYCFC suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union Saturday night in the city of brotherly love. A different lineup was seen Saturday as Maxime Chanot and Ben Sweat started the match over Sebastian Ibeagha and Ronald Matarrita. The boys in blue began the game aggressively, with Jo Inge Berget stretching the high line of the defense. Sadly that was not enough to keep Philadelphia away. After the first half, the Philadelphia offense felt right at home as Cory Burke scored the first goal of the night for his team in the 56th minute. Soon after, Alex Callens was replaced by Ronald Matarrita in an attempt to bring back some offensive momentum the Blues were lacking. Unfortunately, it didn’t produce much change as the NYCFC defense could not contain the Union offense and Ilsinho doubled the lead in the 76th minute for the Union. NYCFC was reduced to ten for the final minutes as Jesus Medina left the field with an injury. The 2-0 advancement did not sit well with NYCFC as the players got anxious and tempers exploded. Matarrita decked Ilsinho in second-half stoppage time, earning a straight red card. The Blues may have been defeated but they return home for their next game. NYCFC will face the NY Red Bulls on Wednesday night in the Hudson River Derby.
