UConn wins season opener in Dan Hurley’s debut

The Connecticut Huskies took the court Thursday night for the 2018 regular season opener with new head coach Dan Hurley. The Huskies came out on top, defeating Morehead State, 80-70.

Hurley got the win in his first game since leaving as head coach of the University of Rhode Island to lead the UConn program.

Sophomore center Josh Carlton led the Huskies with 17 points and eight rebounds. He was one of four Huskies to finish in double-digit scoring. His 17 points were a career high.

UConn led by as many as 13 at one point in the first half, but the Morehead State Eagles continued to battle. The Huskies led by just four at the halfway point, 37-33.

The Huskies pulled away with a little under nine minutes to play after a 13-4 run.

Jalen Adams registered 16 points, Alterique Gilbert dropped in 15, and Tarin Smith contributed 12 in his Huskies debut.

Morehead State’s Lamontray Harris finished with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Huskies returns to action on Sunday, November 11 when they welcome UMKC to Storrs.
