High School Sports 2016 NJSIAA Non-Public Group Finals – Pine Belt Arena, Toms River by Sunil Sunder Raj March 15, 2016 Girls Basketball Non-Public A Final St. John Vianney 72, Immaculate Heart Academy 31 – St. John Vianney senior Kelly Campbell finished with a game-high 20 points including stroking six three-pointers while senior Zoe Pero contributed 12 points as the Lancers crushed Immaculate Heart Academy 72-31 in the Non-Public Group A Final. The Lancers quickly jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and led 20-5 after one period of play. In the second quarter, Campbell was on fire from beyond the arc having already knocking five three-pointers giving St. John Vianney a commanding 40-9 advantage at halftime. Girls Basketball Non-Public B Final Rutgers Prep 69, Saddle River Day 40 – Rutgers Prep junior Gabi Redden poured in game-high 17 points including 11 in the third quarter while senior Niki Metzel contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore Jahsyni Knight added 13 as the Argonauts ended the first half on a 13-5 taking a 36-21 halftime lead and never looked back winning the Non-Public B final 69-40. Boys Basketball Non-Public B Final The St. Anthony Friars weathered a furious fourth quarter run by Roselle Catholic thanks in part to senior Jagan Mosely who scored five of his game-high 16 points in a 26 second span as the Friars defeated the Lions 53-37 in the Non-Public B final. Holding a 40-36 lead with 3:49 left in the fourth quarter, senior Assante Gist buried a trifecta and Mosely followed with a trey of his own bumping the margin back up to double figures. “It was their opportunity to play a really good high school team and pretty much control the game from beginning to end,” said St. Anthony Head Coach Bob Hurley. “A testament to the maturity of pretty much a senior team.” Boys Basketball Non-Public A Final St. Augustine Prep 83, Don Bosco Prep 47 – St. Augustine Prep senior Sa’eed Nelson pumped in 19 of his game-high 30 points in the first half punctuating it with a spectacular half court three-point buzzer beater while teammate junior Justyn Mutts dropped in 21 points and put a highlight dunk fest on in the second quarter as the Hermits pounded the Ironmen 83-47 in the Non-Public B Final. Tied at 5-5 in the first quarter, the Hermits caught fire going on a 14-0 and led 23-11 at the end of one period of play. The lead would only grow in the second quarter as St. Augustine took a 49-23 advantage at halftime. “We just wanted to get out and push the temp,” said Sa’eed Nelson. “Once we got running that is when the lead extended.
