Colonia Crushes St Joseph’s HS (Metuchen) in Boy’s GMC Finals

The Greater Middlesex Conference Men’s basketball finals took place just minutes after the Piscataway women won their third straight title.

The Greater Middlesex Conference Men’s basketball finals took place just minutes after the Piscataway women won their third straight title. While that game was one a lot of fans will not forget, the men’s game was one everyone wants to forget. The Colonia men dominated from the start.

The Patriots came out of the dark almost immediately, opening a 6-0 lead just two minutes in the game. While St. Joseph’s High School (Metuchen) did make a comeback, they were never really able to come back. Colonia went on to win the game by a score of 54-38. Most of the win can be credited to the players’ performance in the second half.

JJ Corbett, who was named GMC Men’s Basketball Tournament MVP, showed everyone in attendance why he wears #1 on his jersey. He scored 22 points in the game, adding 6 total rebounds (2 offensive, 4 defensive) along with 4 assists.

It looked as if the (St. Joseph) Falcons were going to play better basketball in the second half than in the first half, in which they shot 7-16 from the field and 2-6 from the three-point line. During warmups prior to the start of the second half, St Joseph’s made every single shot they attempted. Unfortunately, they did not play that way in the second half. The team actually did worse. They shot 6-16 from the field and 0-3 from the three-point line. They also turned the ball over three times in their first three possessions. Colonia dominated the second half, outscoring St. Joseph’s 30-19, to earn the GMC title.

Eric LeGrand, a Rutgers alumni who suffered an almost fatal injury in 2007 while playing on the Scarlet Knights football team, made a special appearance to the game, as well. While there was no big thing announcing he was there, he was shown on the jumbrotron, eating French fries.

1450 WCTC, the Voice of Central Jersey radio station, was also in attendance. WCTC covers everything going on in Central Jersey, including weather, traffic, sports, and any basic news.
