Soccer Diego Costa’s four goals help fuel Atlético De Madrid by Dushawn London July 29, 2019 Real Madrid 3, Atlético Madrid 7 International Championship Cup Friday, July 26 2019 – 8 p.m. ET Metlife Stadium | East Rutherford, N.J. Friday night’s Madrid Derby at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ was a star-studded matchup that included two La Liga heavyweights looking to set the tone going into the season. This matchup marked the first ever Madrid Derby played in the States. Even with the new additions of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, and Fernand Mendy Real Madrid had no answers for anything Atlético Madrid did. Atlético proved to be the stronger club from kick off, scoring the match’s opening goal in just the first minute. From the opening goal, Diego Costa went on to score three more goals along with teammates João Félix, Ángel Correa, and Vitolo. Costa’s monstrous night would be ended prematurely as he and defender Dani Carvajal would both be disqualified for fighting in the 65th minute of the match. Real managed to patch up the scoreline a little, scoring two late goals from Karim Benzema and Javier Hernández. Other storylines from Fridays night’s game were from winger Gareth Bale. Before Friday’s night matchup there were rumors linking the star to Chinese Club Jiangsu Suning. Amidst the transfer rumors, Madrid still utilized the Welshman, substituting him in the game in the 62nd minute. Real Madrid will head back to the training grounds with zero wins in three games while playing here in the United States.
