Soccer Jersey Express S.C. Begin US Open Cup Quest by Jayson Love May 12, 2015 Jersey Express opens its quest for the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a home match against the N.Y. Greek Americans. The US Open Cup is the United States’ oldest and most democratic of tournaments the only such competition where a matchup such as this can take place – a professional squad against an amateur side – with potential to win nationally recognized hardware. Although the US Open Cup has only been won by MLS teams since the year 2000, there is precedence for minor professional teams to win the cup as the Rochester Rhinos did in 1999. In fact amateur sides have won the competition many times and this Greek American side has won it 4 times its last win coming in 1967. Its four Cup wins are tied with several other teams including Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire both of MLS. Only the now defunct clubs Macabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel have won the cup more times – five apiece. Although Jersey Express face an amateur side, the modern version of New York Greek American is no pushover. The squad won the National Cup in 2014, and is a routine contender for US Soccer’s fifth tier league, the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. The winner will face the brand new New York Red Bulls II a development squad for parent club New York Red Bulls of MLS.
