Soccer Philadelphia Union Quietly Turning their Season Around and Contending for US Open Cup Union await winner of Cosmos/Red Bulls. by Jayson Love June 30, 2015 from: Philadelphiaunion.comCJ Sapong was shown the red card tonight Earlier this season the Philadelphia Union crumbled at adversity – Now, Jim Curtin’s side thrive on it. After allowing 10-man Montreal Impact the lead on former Union man Jack McInerney’s tally, they battled back to salvage a draw on Maurice Edu’s first goal of the year garnering the Union points in back-to-back league games. And tonight, in a US Open Cup tie against DC United, the Union found themselves down to ten men themselves when CJ Sapong was shown a straight red in the 24th minute. United found a goal when Jairo Arrieta fired home from the middle of second choice keeper John McCarthy’s goal. Rather than fold, the outmanned Union held fast and equalized when Eric Ayuk Mbu scored from just in front of the goal in the 56th minute. Union fans could only hope that their heroes could get it to PKs but against all odds, the Union took the lead when Fabinho scored from a near impossible angle in the 79th minute. Philadelphia saw out time and now move on to the round of 8 where it will await the winner of Cosmos/Red Bulls.
