The race to the Premier League Title

The MLS season officially starts back on March 2nd which seems like an eternity away for us soccer fans. If you can’t wait that long to get your soccer fix, why not have a look on what is happening over the pond in the Premier League.

Over in England, the top tier division has recently started the 2nd half of the season and with things hotting up, we take a look at where the top teams are and who we think is likely to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

As it currently stands, Liverpool sit top of the table with 60 points. At the start of the season, everyone thought they would have a decent season, but no one saw them having this good of a season! They spent money and they spent it big. They signed the top defender Virgil Van Dyke for a huge £75m fee, a world record for a defender but the Holland international looks like he has been worth every penny. Liverpool have been solid in defence and only conceded 13 goals, which at this stage of the season is mighty impressive! They are also having an excellent season at the other end of the pitch having scored 54 goals, and a lot of them in style! Mo Salah has kicked on again from last season and Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have also hit the ground running. The scary thing is, they don’t seem like they have clicked yet in the same way they did last towards the end of last season. Jurgen Klopp has done a great job of putting this side together and there seems to be a real team feel about the players. They play as a team and for each other, not individuals. Will this be Liverpool’s year? After a long 29 years, the fans certainly hope so!

Before looking at the competition, let’s see who do the bookmakers have as favourites for the title. UK bookmaker, Sky Bet have Liverpool favourites at 4/6, with Manchester City, who currently sit in second at 6/5. As far as the bookmakers see it, these are the only two teams in the running. Sitting in 3rd is Tottenham Hotspurs who are priced at 100/1 and on even longer odds, is 4th placed Chelsea at a staggering 500/1. So as far as the bookies see it, it really is a 2 horse race. You can bet here and see if you can pick the outright winner correctly.

So, Manchester City currently sit in 2nd place, 4 points behind Liverpool which isn’t a huge amount. If they were 14 points behind then we could throw in the towel and accept Liverpool will win. But Manchester City have been there and done it. They won the title last year and Pep Guardiola knows what it takes to win a title. Having won silverware in every league he has played in, he has the edge over the Liverpool boss who seems to have a habit of stumbling at the last hurdle. Manchester City have the bigger squad with more experience and more depth. Their forward line is scary. Even without Sergio Aguero in the starting line up, no defender will want to face them. Two pacey, tricky wingers in Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane instil fear in to defenders and be it Aguero or Gabriel Jesus, City know how to put the ball in the back of the net.

If you are thinking of having a bet on who will win the Premier League, this betfred sign up offer looks very impressive. So who do we think will do it? It is very, very tough to call but for some reason, we just feel that after almost 30 years without a league trophy, this will finally be the year Liverpool manage to lift the trophy. There is still a long way to go in the season and anything can happen, but this is turning in to a thrilling race at the top. Even though there are only really 2 teams fighting for the title, it is still set to be a thrilling race to the trophy.
