College Two NJ Copa FC Players in the Preliminary List for the 2017 NWSL College Draft by Paola Garcia Cardenas January 8, 2017 As it was announced yesterday by their club, the players Kristyn Shea and Nicole Bates, from the NJ Copa FC team, part of the United Women’s Soccer League, will be on the preliminary list for the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League College draft that will take place on January 12, 2017 at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention in Los Angeles, CA. Kristyn Shea, NJ Copa FC’s goalkeeper who accumulated 664 minutes on the field during the 2016 United Women’s Soccer (UWS) season, also played for NCAA Division I Providence College ‘13-’16, where she earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week two times and ALL-BIG EAST Second Team honors for her performance in goal during her senior season with the Friars. Shea grew up in Piscataway, NJ and has been playing for the New Jersey Copa Academy since she was 11 years old. Nicole Bates, NJ Copa FC’s defender, accumulated 687 minutes on the field during the 2016 UWS season. Bates is also a senior at Fordham University, where she accumulated 1920 minutes with the Rams and was named 2016 CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American® and Academic All-District, First Team All-Atlantic 10 as well as receiving NSCAA Scholar All-East Second Team Honors during her 2016 season. A Basking Ridge, NJ local, Bates was ranked in the top “20” player for the New Jersey North 2 Region in 2012. As the NWSL continues to grow and help encourage the development of women soccer players, Krystin and Nicole will be part of the 148 eligible players to be selected amongst the 10 NWSL teams.
